We’re updating our Significance and Engagement Policy. The policy is a requirement of the Local Government Act 2002. Our current Policy was adopted in 2021, so it’s time to review it and make sure it is fit for purpose. We've made some changes, and we’re keen to know your thoughts.
What is a significance and engagement policy?
A Significance and Engagement Policy provides clear guidance on how the Council determines the importance of various issues, proposals, assets, decisions, and activities. It is a crucial tool that helps ensure the community is properly engaged in decisions that affect them.
The purpose and scope of this policy include:
Determining the Level of Significance: It outlines the degree of significance that should be attached to different issues or proposals. This ensures that important matters are treated with the attention they deserve, while less significant decisions are handled appropriately.
Clarifying Community Engagement: The policy specifies when and how the community can expect to be consulted. It ensures residents are informed and have an opportunity to provide input on key decisions, helping shape the future of the district.
Guiding Council Decision-Making: The policy helps guide the Council’s decision-making process around consultation and engagement, ensuring that the right steps are taken to involve the public in important decisions.
By having a well-defined Significance and Engagement Policy,we aim to maintain a transparent, accountable, and inclusive approach to decision-making that benefits the entire community.
What are the changes we are proposing?
The changes proposed for this policy are a refresh and reformat to be more readable and consistent with plain language requirements.
