New Gore Bridge Resource Consent Application
Consultation has concluded
The Environment Court upheld an appeal by the Waimea Plains Landscape Preservation Society against the bridge. We were ordered to pay the society $15,373 costs. This project is now closed. Thank you to everyone who took the time to be involved.
The Gore District Council is proposing to build a cable-stay bridge across the Mataura River, about 650 metres upstream of the existing Gore traffic bridge.
This requires land use resource consents from Environment Southland and the Council, as the regulating authorities. The consent applications were notified and a two day hearing was held before three independent commissioners.

The decision by the Commissioners' to approve the applications has been appealed by the Waimea Plains Land Protection Society Inc. You can read the appeal and supporting information under Resource Consent Appeal Information (at right of page).
The new bridge will provide a cycling and walking link, and carry a new water pipeline from the East Gore water treatment plant to the Jacobstown Wells.
It is proposed to locate the bridge near the intersection between Church and Huron streets on the east bank, and Surrey Street on the west bank.
The bridge's dimensions are:
- 39 metres at its highest point,
- 90 metres long, and
- 3 metres wide.
