We are calling for feedback on how we manage the District’s parks and reserves.

Later this year we will be reviewing our Reserve Management Plans. These plans provide the community with certainty about the management of each reserve. Parks and open spaces throughout the District are covered in the Plans. These include:

  • Gore Gardens,
  • Bannerman Park,
  • Dolamore Park,
  • Waikaka Domain,
  • Pukerau Recreation Reserve
  • Tulloch Park.

Before reviewing the existing plans, we want your feedback. We are keen to hear about what's in the existing Reserve Management Plans and if there's anything we need to add.

Are the existing plans fit for purpose, or should there be changes to reflect the needs of future generations?

What is a Reserve Management Plan?

A reserve management plan ensures that the use, development, management and protection of reserves is consistent with their classifications. It provides our staff and the community with certainty about the function and management of each reserve or group of reserves.

We look after multiple parks and reserves within the District that are managed under the Reserves Act 1977 (the Act).

Existing Reserve Management Plans

An omnibus Gore District Reserve Management Plan was prepared in 2015 and adopted in 2016/17. It consists of four volumes:

Volume 1 General Policies: This volume covers all general conditions relating to all parks and reserves in the Gore District

Volume 2 Individual Policies: This volume specifically covers other parks and reserves in the Gore District (excluding those covered in Volumes 3 &4) The list includes the Gore, Mataura, Pukerau and Waikaka cemeteries, playgrounds, sports fields and all other local reserves.

Volume 3 Town Belt Reserves: This volume covers the town belt reserve strip from the Eccles Street Playground through to the Preston Street Playground. The jewel in the crown is the Gore Gardens, which sits in the middle of this strip. The history of the Town Belt dates back to 1874 when the town was being developed and first surveyed.

Volume 4 Dolamore Park Scenic Reserve: This volume is specific to our largest park. Dolamore Park is 95 hectares of native and exotic plantings, including a significant rhododendron and tree collection. It is next to the much larger Haumuri / Croydon Bush which is administered by DOC.
