This project has been completed.

Gore’s Main Street, with its colourful garden plots and trees, is often admired by locals and visitors alike. There are 26 trees on Main Street, between Medway and Fairfield streets.

Planted over 20 years ago, some of these trees have out-grown their locations and are causing problems. The main issues are:

  • Obstructing signage,
  • Damaging infrastructure and paving, causing a danger to pedestrians, and
  • Growing into overhead wires

We have pruned the lower branches of trees on the east side of Main Street so they are clear of traffic and pedestrians, and where possible allow better view of retail banners.

On the west side there’s more of an issue with damage and we are looking at removing four trees in early November. They are:

A Japanese Elm

There are two elms outside the BNZ bank blocking drivers’ view of directional road signs. The crowns of these trees are also impacting on overhead wires. One tree will be removed, as requested by Waka Kotahi NZTA, and the other pruned back.

Three Dawn Redwoods

Dawn Redwoods can grow over 25m high and have a spread of about 15m. The five on the west side of Main Street are only a third of their mature size, but they are already causing issues.

The trees to be removed are:

  • Two located on the west side of Main Street, between Mersey and Irk streets
  • One located near Oui Oui and Selectrix.

Replacement trees

Gore’s streetscape wouldn’t be the same without trees. We will be planting Pillar Crabapple trees to replace those we remove. This tree has a columnar form and isn’t prone to causing significant infrastructure issues.

They will be plant in early autumn next year in similar locations, but closer to the carriageway. The new plantings will incorporate new technologies such as strata cells. These cells allow for better directional root growth.
