Keeping of Animals, Poultry and Bees Bylaw Review

We are reviewing our Keeping of Animals, Poultry and Bees Bylaw 2016. 

We use it to effectively control and address issues that may arise around keeping livestock, poultry and bees in urban areas. These issues include

• wandering stock damaging property or causing a hazard to traffic
• noise
• odour 

We feel the bylaw has worked well in its current form. It has set general expectations for the urban community about what animals, poultry or bees can be kept and any conditions that may apply. 

It has also given the community the ability to raise issues with us, knowing we have the power and mechanism to deal with them.

What's different?

The only change to the existing bylaw is adding the Gore Gardens and pastoral land south of the Gore Multisports Complex, on Charlton Road, to the list of land the bylaw does not apply. The proposed change is due to these areas being Council-owned.

What happens next?

We will acknowledge all submissions by email or letter.

Once submissions close, our staff will review them. Should a hearing be required, a date for this will be set and submitters wishing to speak at the hearing will be informed of the proposed date.

Our staff will then provide a report to be considered at a subsequent Council meeting.
